Strengthening Education Systems

We partner with governments to unite around our common goal of improving learning outcomes. Because only then can we achieve our vision of literacy and numeracy for all children.

Since our founding, government partnership has been a cornerstone of our work.

Through close engagement with central, regional, and local officials, Building Tomorrow 1) assesses needs, 2) co-develops strategies for tackling the learning crisis, 3) mobilizes communities, and 4) trains implementers in our Roots to Rise methodology. Our multi-pronged approach helps us reach more learners with evidence-based programming.

Tackling Sustainable Development Goal 4, Together

Governments carry the torch when it comes to addressing illiteracy and innumeracy. We work with ministries of education to devise programs meeting actual needs on the ground. We also provide training and technical expertise to support teachers, school leaders, community and district officials in implementing our proven Roots to Rise foundational learning program.

Community-Led Change

Results at the local level

We work with local leaders and communities to strengthen education from the ground up. Through a partnership with the Hempel Foundation, we’re working with districts in Uganda to embed former Building Tomorrow Fellows in local District Education Offices as Education Systems Strengthening Coordinators (ESSCs). These ESSCs are supporting district-led efforts to bring our Roots to Rise literacy and numeracy program to even more learners, sustainably. Our locally-led work is being noticed. In 2024, the Ugandan Ministry of Education and Sports recognized Roots to Rise-implementing districts as “centers of excellence.”
