Building Tomorrow in Uganda
Across rural Uganda, we mobilize communities to improve foundational literacy and numeracy for primary-aged girls and boys. With two decades of locally led experience, we support and strengthen schools and communities in partnership with local and central government.
Addressing the learning crisis
8 in 10 Ugandan children can’t read a simple text by age 10. Further, boys and girls often can’t reach their full potential in the classroom due to systemic barriers, including teacher shortages.
We’re tackling these challenges head-on. Through community-powered implementation models, our Roots to Rise program is reaching learners where it matters most, providing remedial reading, writing, and math skills to children both in and out of school.

Our work in Uganda
We’ve been improving education in Uganda through locally led models since 2006. Beginning with school construction, increasing access for tens of thousands of rural children, we now work in communities across the country to boost learning outcomes through Community Education Teams. We also partner with local and central governments to co-create strategies for strengthening the education system.
In short, we’ve:
- Reached more than one million girls and boys with reading, writing, and maths skills
- Recruited more than 25,000 Community Education Volunteers
- Enrolled over a quarter of a million children in school, nearly 8,000 of whom have disabilities
- Constructed 87 primary schools across the country
